Loin des yeux... [2024]
Mixed drawings, hand-made publication
How do we feel, far away from people we love? Living abroad and seeing our family and friends only through the screen of our devices? Can we still emotionally connect the same way?
Loin des yeux... was a way to approach home sickness with tenderness and self-reflection, through a series of pen drawings I made from the eyes of people I miss, mixed with drawings from Mahaut, my —then— two-year-old sister. The format of the drawings follows the 9:16 ratio of an iPhone screen, depicting the look of the loved ones, reminding of a FaceTime call or a photo in your phone gallery.
The presence of the seven Mahaut’s drawings is a reminder of how fast kids grow, especially when you only see them once every few months. When I am writing these lines, she is already drawing characters and family portraits.
This series of drawings was later combined in a one of one hand-stitched book, with the drawings printed inside japanese-bound pages. The paper used, semi-transparent, gave a sweet, misty texture to the drawings, similar to a veil.
